Gig Review: Elvis Perkins In Dearland at the ICA, London 2009

After a two year absence, Elvis Perkins returned to the UK on Monday night for a one-off gig at the ICA with a new sound, a new CD and a nearly new band.

Support was provided by Emily Barker and the Red Clay Halo, an all-female quartet who slipped onto the stage almost unnoticed but soon had the crowd rapt with their powerful stripped-down acoustic folk sound.

Perkins took the stage not long after accompanied by Dearland, the band he assembled for his second album. As this gig doubled as a CD launch, the crowd were mostly unfamiliar with the new material so responded far more to older songs like Emile's Vietnam and Ash Wednesday, although Hey and Shampoo were impactful enough to raise some cheers and get the crowd dancing. A special mention should be made of David Duffy's virtuoso violin playing - so good that Perkins namechecked him at least five times during the gig - but all of Dearland are accomplished multi-instrumentalists. They re-form themselves around Perkins as each song requires, switching from keys to guitars to brass seamlessly, even the drummer at two notable points strapped on a marching drum and started reeling around the stage, threatening injury to both himself and his bandmates!

The crowd were happy to alternate swaying along to the more intimate material from Ash Wednesday with dancing along to the more unfamiliar songs from In Dearland, and generated a huge buzz inside the ICA theatre's tiny space. As they filtered out after a barnstorming encore, I doubt many of them were disappointed.

The Band Discuss the New, Self Titled, Album Elvis Perkins in Dearland

6th January 2009

"This album is faster and younger than Ash Wednesday. Being in a studio with three other creatives, instead of just one, was a new thing", said Elvis, "It takes four times as long to decide everything... but in the end, this kind of interplay made for much good."

"On this new record we wanted to capture the spirit of our performances," drummer Nick Kinsey said. "The challenge was to get down that spontaneity." added Elvis.

The band also have hinted that the new album will be followed up with some new tour dates.

Christmas Arrives Early for Elvis Perkins in Dearland Fans!

21st December 2008

The new album is complete and to celebrate the band are giving users a sneak preview of 3 of the tracks. The songs include Shampoo and Doomsday, tried and tested during their tour dates in the last 18 months. Shampoo sounds like a Donovan-esq folk classic with powerful descriptive imagery. Doomsday is the instantly recognisable foot stomper which begins with a with the single brass melody soon joined by guitar and ending in a crescendo of drums. The final track is Send My Fond Regards To Lonelyville which has the trademark Elvis quality of sounding like it could have been written 100 years ago or last week. Brand new and yet familiar.
